FRESH Necklace by Mara Labell for Antalya Designs will be modeled at The Wishmaker's Ball in Naples, by co-chair Dylan Sanders and then auctioned at the end of the night with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Make-a-Wish.  (This gorgeous piece retails at $2195).  Jewelry will be provided for Amy Sedlacek, also a co-chair and morning anchor on ABC7.

SUMMER has arrived!!!  We look forward to months of endless sunshine and long balmy nights and that means it's about time to start re-thinking our wardrobes!  The biggest runway trend for summer 2014 is cool and contemporary TURQUOISE jewelry, to perfectly accentuate your summer brights, prints, whites and neutrals.  Reminiscent of the beautiful Mediterranean ocean, the Turquoise opaque mineral ranges dramatically in color from white to summer sky blue to green and grey hues and as a result flatters every spectrum of skin tone. 

Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones and throughout history has been revered as both a gem and ornamental stone.  Reflective of the rich blue of the sky - yet a solid stone of the earth, Turquoise is believed by many cultures for thousands of years to unite the heavens and earth.  The balancing effects of this, bringing inner peace and tranquility, encouraging mental clarity and communication.  

Native american tribes used 'pieces of sky', as a crystal of protection, in Ancient Egypt (as far back as 3000BCE) powerful rulers were adorned with Turquoise amulets.  In Ancient China, Turquoise was believed to be a powerful healing stone, offering protection, good fortune and positivity.

Spring / Summer 2014 Jewelry Style Trend: Pearls

Pearls have always been in style, transcending fashions that have come and gone throughout the generations.  However...  This season, pearls are having a dramatic resurgence in popularity, enjoying global magazine cover domination, thanks to Chanel, Marchesa and Oscar de la Renta, amongst others.

Leading the way, Karl Lagerfeld pays homage to Coco Chanel's design signature, with a plethora of giant pearls for Spring/Summer 2014 throughout the entire collection.  Indeed, enduring style icon, Coco, dressed in black dress and pearls, epitomizes the ideology of 'style' for most of us.

Women have been wearing pearls since Ancient Rome - in fact, the earliest pearl jewelry was discovered within the sarcophagus of a persian princess, who died in 520 B.C!  (This piece is now on display at the Louvre Museum, in Paris.)  Pearls throughout history have been associated with purity, perfection and elegance.

As a contemporary jewelry artisan, I choose to use freshwater pearls - some oversize in white and peacock hues and many interesting shapes, such as *Keishi pearls (*flat irregular shape with a higher lustre), juxtaposed with non-traditional materials such as swarovski crystals, sterling silver and gold.

The result is feminine, understated - yet bold and striking statement jewelry pieces.
